M58 - Barred Spiral Galaxy in Virgo

Messier 58 is a barred spiral galaxy about 62 million light-years away in the heart of the Virgo Cluster. Discovered by Charles Messier in 1779, it is one of the first spiral systems ever cataloged and remains one of the cluster’s brightest members. Its compact nucleus harbors a supermassive black hole, and an ultra-compact nuclear ring fuels localized star formation even as the galaxy’s outer arms appear “anemic,” stripped of gas by its dense cluster environment.

This image was captured with Telescope Live’s SPA-2-CCD system using the 70 cm Officina Stellare RC telescope in Spain. With just 1h20m of LRGB data, the dataset posed significant challenges: color blips, elevated noise, and artifacts from the limited frame count. Careful preprocessing, synthetic luminance creation, multiscale filtering, and manual correction were needed to salvage the signal.

Despite the short integration and heavy cleanup, the final result highlights the elegant bar and subtle spiral structure of this distant Virgo giant.
