      LMC 8 Panel Mosaic (SHO)

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is one of the Milky Way’s nearest companions, a barred irregular dwarf galaxy located about 160,000 light-years away in Dorado and spanning ~32,000 light-years across. As a galactic neighbor, it offers an unparalleled laboratory for astrophysics: from massive star-forming complexes such as the Tarantula Nebula, to supernova remnants like SN 1987A, to extended filaments of ionized gas threading its irregular bar and spiral-like arms.

This image is an ambitious 8-panel narrowband mosaic captured with Telescope Live’s AUS-2-CMOS system in Australia, combining data across sulfur (S II), hydrogen-alpha (Hα), and oxygen (O III) emission lines.

      Processing Notes

      - Each panel was pre-processed in PixInsight with WBPP, then integrated into the full mosaic in Astro Pixel Processor, since PixInsight’s Photometric Mosaic script struggled with datasets of this size.

      - Post-processing was especially demanding - over 80% of the time was spent simply waiting for processes to complete, given the huge file sizes.

      - Careful blending, gradient management, and color balancing were essential to produce a seamless and detailed view of the LMC.
