NGC 1097 = Arp 77

NGC 1097 is a barred spiral galaxy of type SB(s)b with an exceptionally bright core, making it a member of the group of Seyfert galaxies (Type 1), which, along with quasars, are among the most active galaxies. The supermassive black hole at its center is fed by stars, gas, and dust, which spiral into it, are torn apart, and heated, forming an accretion disk around the black hole.
