Vela X,Y,Z are three strong radio sources within the Vela Supernova Remnant, an expanding debris cloud from a massive star that exploded in a Type II supernova approx. 11,000 to 12,300 years ago and is located approx. 800-1000 light-years from Earth.
These three strong radio sources were identified in a radio survey in the 1950’s. Vela X was later identified as a pulsar wind Nebula (also known as a Plerion) driven by the Vela Pulsar.
