A Stellar Spire

This object referred to as a ‘Stellar Spire’ is found in the Eagle Nebula, M16. It is a towering structure, a 9.5 light-year column of dust and gas - this is nearly double the length of the famous Pillars of Creation, and was, in April 2025, the subject of a new image from Hubble (celebrating Hubbles 35th anniversary). This cosmic aspire is made of cold gas and interstellar dust, dense enough in places to collapse under gravity and give birth to stars. Energetic radiation from nearby massive stars is slowly eroding it, chipping away the spires edges, sculpting are and knots - triggering more star formation.
