NGC 1316, Lenticular Galaxy in the Constellation Fornax

NGC 1316 is a lenticular galaxy in the Constellation Fornax. Many dark dust clouds and lanes are visible giving the galaxy its color and layered appearance. (ESO.org)

The eerie silhouette of dark dust clouds against the glowing nucleus of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 may represent the aftermath of a 100 million year old cosmic collision between the elliptical and a smaller companion galaxy. (Space Telescope Science Institute)
