NGC 2736 — The Pencil Nebula: It’s Written in the Stars

NGC 2736, better known as the Pencil Nebula, is a bright filament within the vast Vela Supernova Remnant. It is part of the expanding debris from a massive star that exploded thousands of years ago, sending shockwaves through the surrounding interstellar gas.

This image was processed in a modified HOO narrowband palette, using hydrogen-alpha and oxygen data as the main structure, with a touch of sulfur added for warmth and depth. The result lets the Pencil cut across the frame in blue-cyan, surrounded by warmer red-brown emission from the larger remnant field.

The delicate filaments and smoky background give the scene an almost hand-drawn quality — as if the shockwave itself left a message written across the stars. I kept the processing restrained, with controlled stars, an atmospheric field, and enough color separation to let the Pencil’s structure speak for itself.
