The Ghost Nebula

SH2-136 is a reflection nebula located approx. 1,470 light-years away in the constellation of Cepheus. It spans more than 2 light years and is illuminated by several nearby stars. It is commonly known as ‘The Ghost Nebula’ due to it’s spooky appearance, the nebula’s clouds of dust and gas have shapes that resemble human figures with arms raised.

The nebula lies at the edge of the Cepheus Flare molecular cloud, a large star-forming region that also encompasses the nearby Iris Nebula.

The Ghost nebula is referred to a Bok globule, a cloud of cold, dense material with denser knots that can collapse and form new stars - these typically produce binary and multiple star systems. It contains a star that is still in the process of forming.
