NGC 5078 — The Tidal Pull

NGC 5078 — The Tidal Pull

NGC 5078 is a dramatic edge-on galaxy in Hydra, crossed by a warped dust lane that cuts through its bright inner glow. In this LRGB view, the galaxy is mostly carried by luminance, but the color still leaves a cool blue halo around the core and a warmer, broken ribbon of dust through the disk.

Nearby IC 879 adds the reason for the title. The dust lane in NGC 5078 is thought to be warped by interaction with IC 879, which itself appears distorted into an S-shape by the encounter. That quiet gravitational tug gives the scene its sense of motion — not a collision frozen in drama, but a slow tidal pull reshaping both galaxies over time.

I chose a tighter hero crop for this one because the story lives in the dust lane, the glow, and that nearby companion. The wider field was nice, but centering the galaxy gives the image more authority and keeps the eye where the interaction is happening.
