      Sh2-103 — The Broken Sphere

Sh2-103, better known as the Veil Nebula or Cygnus Loop, is the sprawling remnant of a massive star that exploded thousands of years ago. Rather than focusing on one of its familiar sections—the Eastern Veil, Western Veil, or Pickering’s Triangle—this wide-field view reveals them as parts of a single enormous structure.

What appears to us as a broken circle is really the projection of an expanding three-dimensional shell. As the shock wave from the ancient supernova continues to encounter surrounding interstellar material, it produces the intricate filaments of glowing hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur that trace portions of that shattered sphere.

Processed in the Foraxx palette, with a restrained enhancement of the hydrogen-alpha structure, the color differences help separate the tangled shock fronts while preserving the delicate, almost threadlike character of the remnant.

Sh2-103 — The Broken Sphere is a view of the Veil not as a collection of individual nebulae, but as the remains of a single catastrophic event still expanding through space.
