NGC 2626 — Dust and Reflection in Vela - LRGB - Halpha

NGC 2626 is a compact but remarkably complex nebula in the constellation Vela, located along the Vela Molecular Ridge roughly 3,200 light-years from Earth. At its centre, interstellar dust reflects the light of a young, hot star, producing the distinctive blue-cyan reflection nebula. Surrounding it is the reddish hydrogen emission of the much larger RCW 27 region, together with dense obscuring dust that cuts dramatically across the brighter nebulosity.

What attracted me to this field is the contrast between these different structures. The bright turquoise reflection region is surrounded by softer red and magenta emission, while the dark dust running through the centre gives the nebula surprising depth and complexity.

In processing, I wanted to preserve the delicate structure within the reflection nebula while retaining the faint surrounding emission and keeping the rich stellar field natural. I paid particular attention to maintaining separation between the cyan core, darker dust lanes, and warmer hydrogen emission without pushing the background too dark.

A fascinating and relatively less frequently imaged region of Vela, and one where reflection, emission and obscuring dust all come together within the same field.
