M83

M83, also known as the Southern Pinwheel, is located 15 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Hydra.

It has a small bright core and the outline of a bar, just like our galaxy. The newest generations of stars in M83 are formed mainly in clusters at the edges of dark, spiraling dust belts. These young clusters of stars are only a few million years old and produce enormous amounts of ultraviolet light. This light is absorbed by the surrounding diffuse gas clouds, causing them to glow with pinkish-ruby hydrogen light.
