NGC 1316 is a huge elliptical galaxy. Dark clouds around the core are likely what remains from a merger with a spiral galaxy. On the other hand, the spiral galaxy NGC 1317 had a peaceful life so far. Tone mapping in Affinity Photo did a great job at revealing the star shells around the galaxy's core.
