Eagle Nebula SHO CHI-1

The Eagle Nebula (M 16), also known as the Star Queen Nebula, is one of my favorite objects to process. It's a young open cluster of stars in the constellation Serpens at a distance of 5,700 light-years from Earth. The most interesting part of this is the Pillars of Creation, made famous by images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, and resolved very nicely by the CHI-1 telescope. The Pillars are active star forming regions which are in danger of being gradually eroded away by shock waves from a supernova which exploded 8,000-9,000 years ago. The largest pillar on the left is approximately 1 light-year long from base to tip.
