IC 5332 - Spiral Galaxy in Sculptor

IC 5332 is a faint SABc spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away in the southern constellation Sculptor. Discovered by Lewis Swift in 1897, it’s viewed almost perfectly face-on, revealing a tiny central bulge surrounded by delicate, loosely wound arms spanning ~66,000 light-years. Its low surface brightness (~23.8 mag/arcsec²) makes its fine dust lanes and star-forming knots challenging to capture. Imaged here with 14 hours of LRGB data from Telescope Live’s 24-inch PlaneWave in Chile, the depth and resolution bring out its graceful symmetry and subtle structure, a rare southern gem also studied in detail by Hubble and JWST.
