IC 5201 - Barred Spiral Galaxy in Grus and its Celestial Sentinels

IC 5201 (also ESO 289‑G018, PGC 68618), is a barred spiral galaxy about 35 million light-years away in the southern constellation Grus. Discovered in 1900 by Joseph Lunt at the Cape Town Observatory, it spans roughly 90,000 light-years and shows a prominent bar with thin, loosely wound spiral arms dotted by H II regions. Considered fairly isolated, with only a few nearby galaxies; one HI study suggests a past tidal interaction with a nearby irregular satellite (AM 2220‑460), which may explain some disk asymmetry and warping.

This image was captured with Telescope Live’s 24-inch PlaneWave in Chile, using 3:30h of LRGB integration. While a relatively short dataset, it reveals the central bar, subtle spiral arms, faint star-forming knots and presence of 2 bright stars that give this overlooked southern galaxy its quiet elegance.
