Arp 273 - Galactic Rose in Andromeda

Arp 273 is a striking pair of interacting spiral galaxies in the constellation Andromeda, located about 300 million light-years distant. The larger galaxy, UGC 1810, is roughly five times more massive than its companion, UGC 1813, whose orbit appears to have driven it through the disk of UGC 1810. The tidal interaction has warped UGC 1810 into a rose-like shape, causing one of its outer arms to form a partial ring - giving the system its nickname, “a rose made of galaxies” or “galactic rose“. Arp placed this pair in his catalog of peculiar galaxies as a compelling example of tidal distortion and interacting morphology.
