“The Fighting Dragons of Ara” – RCW 108 in SHO

Two colossal dragons of gas and fire clash in the southern constellation Ara — a stellar battlefield where creation and destruction intertwine.

This is RCW 108, a vast H II region at the edge of the Ara OB1 association, where powerful stellar winds and ultraviolet radiation carve the surrounding molecular clouds into magnificent, flame-like structures.

Rendered in the SHO palette, this deep narrowband composition reveals the nebula’s elemental anatomy:

Sulfur-II (SII) blazes in red and orange — the scorching breath of the dragons.

Hydrogen-alpha (Ha) burns golden through the dense molecular ridges.

Oxygen-III (OIII) paints ethereal cyan tones — the cooling plasma of ancient stellar outflows.
