Messier 83 (M83), widely known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy and catalogued as NGC 5236, is a stunning face-on barred spiral galaxy (SAB(s)c), situated in the constellation Hydra at a distance of roughly 15 million light-years from Earth. It is one of the brightest and closest grand-design spiral galaxies visible in the night sky, its loosely wound spiral arms and central bar giving it a pinwheel-like appearance that mirrors the structure of the more famous northern Pinwheel Galaxy (M101).
M83’s spiral arms are rich with dark dust lanes, luminous young star clusters, and reddish H II regions, the latter marking sites of intense star formation that pepper the galaxy’s disk in a tapestry of stellar nurseries. This prolific activity has earned M83 evocative nicknames such as the “Thousand Ruby Galaxy,” reflecting the multitude of glowing hydrogen clouds that trace the arms’ intricate structure.
The galaxy’s central region is equally dynamic: gas channeled by its bar fuels ongoing star formation, producing bright clusters and contributing to a complex core that recent observations suggest may hide intriguing nuclear structure - a double nucleus, a feature that may result from a lopsided disc of stars orbiting its central supermassive black hole. M83 has also been a prolific host of observed supernovae, with several exploding in its arms over the past century, underscoring its role as a laboratory for studying stellar evolution in environments of vigorous star formation.
