NGC 1055 - Edge-on Spiral Galaxy in Cetus

NGC 1055 is a striking edge-on barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Cetus, lying at a distance of roughly ~50–55 million light-years. Its geometry is the whole show here: a bright, prominent central bulge is cut by a wide, irregular dust lane, and the disk looks slightly “lifted” and uneven in places, giving the galaxy a subtly three-dimensional, warped impression rather than a perfectly flat line. NGC 1055 is also commonly discussed as part of the small M77 (NGC 1068) group, and it appears close on the sky to M77—close enough that observers often think of them as a paired scene—though what stands out in NGC 1055 itself is the complex interplay of dust, disk structure, and a hefty bulge seen almost exactly side-on.
