M63, within the M51 group, more or less at the same 30 MLy distance. M63 was first discovered by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain, then later verified by his colleague Charles Messier on 14 June 1779.[5] The galaxy became listed as object 63 in the Messier Catalogue.It is approximately as large in the sky as M51, and 10 times smaller than M33, member of the local group, which is 10 times closer.
