Messier 81 (M81, or Bode's Galaxy) is a stunning "grand design" spiral galaxy located 11.6–12 million light-years away in the Ursa Major constellation. Discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1774, this bright, active galaxy is known for its well-defined spiral arms, a massive 70-million-solar-mass central black hole, and intense star formation.
