This is NGC 2014, a star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way about 160,000 light-years away. The small swirls in this image are regions illuminated by hot, young, blue stars only a few million years old. Their ultraviolet light and stellar winds are shaping the surrounding hydrogen gas, creating the arcs, filaments, and cavities visible throughout the nebula.
The red band crossing the image is the western edge of the Coral Reef Nebula (NGC 1948), while the blue patch is part of the Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus), the largest and most active star-forming region in the Local Group of galaxies.
