Caldwell 49 — The Rosette Nebula

Captured last Friday night beneath clear spring skies, this image of Caldwell 49 combines 7 hours of narrowband integration and first time using Hα, OIII, and SII filters. With only a limited imaging window available each night, I was fortunate to gather enough exposure time to complete this project under favorable conditions. I am very proud of this image and where I got so far given I have only am doing astrophotography for about 5 months. It is a steep learning curve, one I am loving it, but so rewarding.

Located roughly 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Monoceros, Caldwell 49 is a vast emission nebula and stellar nursery shaped by the intense radiation of the young stars embedded within its core. The interaction between these stars and the surrounding gas creates the intricate layers, dark dust lanes, and glowing structures visible throughout the nebula.

For this processing, I aimed to preserve the soft inner oxygen structures, subtle contrast in the darker regions, and faint outer nebulosity while maintaining a natural-looking star field and balanced narrowband color palette.
