      Dark Wolf Fenrir Nebula

      Dark Wolf Fenrir Nebula

Also known as Sandqvist & Lindroos 17 or

SL 17 for short. This rarely imaged dark nebula is located 5,300 light-years away near the tail of Scorpius. This striking dark cloud of thick dust resembles a howling wolf. This dark nebula is a small component of the RCW 113 or Gum 55 nebula, which is ionized by the SCO OB1 association. This association contains many young and hot star clusters actively sculpting the surrounding dust and gas clouds with fierce stellar winds and radiation. It is also known as the Fenrir nebula after the wolf from Norse mythology. This is one of many objects that are too low on my horizon to image at home. I used data from Telescope Live and blended broadband data with narrowband hydrogen alpha data to retain the natural red color while showing the detail of the ionized gas.
