Barnard's Galaxy

NGC 6822 is a barred irregular galaxy that is part of the Local Group and is one of the closest galaxies to the Milky Way. Its structure and composition are similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud. It was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884, after whom it is named. Its study is hampered by its proximity to the galactic plane, which makes it subject to the effects of interstellar dust.
