A wide-field LRGB image of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC), captured with Telescope Live’s SPA‑1‑CCD system. The data totals just over 15 hours of integration, though severe alignment shifts between frames and prominent stacking artifacts - especially in the corners - led to an unfortunate crop that sacrificed some nebulosity.
The Taurus Molecular Cloud is a vast complex of dark, dusty filaments located roughly 430 - 480 light-years away, spanning the constellations Taurus and Auriga and stretching across more than 30° of sky. This cloud hosts dense, opaque lanes of molecular gas and dust - so thick that they block visible light from the stars behind them, giving the TMC its dramatic appearance. Infrared observations, particularly from the Herschel Space Observatory, reveal a network of filamentary structures, some harboring pre-stellar cores like L1544 that may evolve into new stars. Embedded within the TMC is the well-known star-forming region Taurus–Auriga, which contains dozens of T Tauri stars and protoplanetary disks - most famously HL Tauri, whose disk structure has been imaged in great detail.
