Messier 66 (also NGC 3627, Arp 16), is a striking intermediate barred spiral galaxy (SAB(s)b) located about 31 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. Along with M65 and NGC 3628, it forms the famous Leo Triplet (Arp 317).
M66 is the most massive and dynamically disturbed member of the trio. Gravitational interactions, primarily with NGC 3628, have dramatically reshaped the galaxy’s structure. Its asymmetric spiral arms, tilted dusty disk, and offset central bar are all tell-tale signs of these tidal encounters. These interactions have also triggered significant star-forming activity, particularly along the brighter southern arm.
The galaxy spans roughly 85,200 light-years and displays a rich combination of dust lanes, blue star-forming knots, and a luminous yellow core. Halton Arp included M66 as Arp 16 in his Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies due to its pronounced structural distortions and detached segments.
