Messier 101 (NGC 5457, Arp 26), the Pinwheel Galaxy, is one of the grandest examples of a face-on spiral in the northern sky—an SAB(rs)cd galaxy sprawling more than 252,000 light-years across and located roughly 21 million light-years away in Ursa Major. Its structure is dominated by loosely wound arms rich with H II regions, blue stellar clusters, and sprawling complexes of star formation. The galaxy’s disk is asymmetric, shaped over time by interactions with its satellite galaxies, but its inner regions remain exquisitely ordered, with prominent dust lanes spiraling into a bright, densely packed core. Discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781 and was communicated that year to Charles Messier, who verified its position for inclusion in the Messier Catalogue as one of its final entries. Halton Arp later added it to his Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 26 because of its “one heavy arm” feature.
When viewed at high focal length, the core of M101 reveals a wealth of structure often lost in wide-field presentations. The central region is a complex lattice of dust filaments, star-forming knots, and turbulent gas lanes, arranged in a multi-arm pattern that winds tightly around the nucleus. The abundance of massive stars and dense gas clouds makes the central kiloparsecs intensely active: Hα imaging in particular highlights the glowing nebular arcs and ionized structures intertwined with the dust, offering a glimpse into the galaxy’s energetic inner life. These bright cores of star formation trace the dynamical influence of the galaxy’s inner spiral structure, which funnels gas inward and fuels both stellar birth and the luminous central concentration of older stars.
This image presents a 21-hour HaLRGB integration acquired with Telescope Live’s older SPA-2 CCD system, using the Officina Stellare RC-700 with 5600 mm of focal length to zoom into M101’s central region.
