Messier 81 - The Bode's Galaxy in Ursa Major

Messier 81 (NGC 3031), also known as Bode’s Galaxy, is a grand-design spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major, located at a distance of roughly 11–12 million light-years. As one of the nearest large spiral galaxies outside the Local Group, M81 has been studied in exceptional detail across the electromagnetic spectrum. It is classified as an SA(s)ab galaxy, featuring a bright, massive central bulge and well-defined spiral arms threaded with prominent dust lanes and star-forming regions. At its core lies an active supermassive black hole, making M81 a low-luminosity Seyfert galaxy and a key reference object for understanding nuclear activity in nearby spirals.

M81’s appearance is strongly influenced by past gravitational interactions within the M81 Group, most notably with M82 and NGC 3077. These encounters have distorted the outer disk and triggered waves of star formation, leaving behind subtle asymmetries and faint tidal structures. Along the spiral arms, large H II regions and stellar associations trace ongoing star formation, while the inner regions are dominated by older, yellowish stellar populations. Narrowband Hα imaging reveals the distribution of ionized gas in exquisite detail, highlighting knots and filaments embedded within the arms and outlining the galaxy’s spiral density waves.
