Messier 82 / Arp 337 - Starburst Galaxy in Ursa Major

Messier 82 (NGC 3034), commonly known as the Cigar Galaxy, is a nearby starburst galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major, located at a distance of roughly 11–12 million light-years. Classified as an irregular or I0 galaxy, M82 is dramatically shaped by its close gravitational interaction with its massive neighbor M81. This encounter has triggered intense star-forming activity in M82’s core, making it one of the most active starburst galaxies in the local universe. M82 is also catalogued as Arp 337 in Halton Arp’s Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies, a designation that highlights its distorted morphology and dramatic outflows as a direct consequence of gravitational interaction with M81 and its intense starburst-driven activity.

The defining feature of M82 is its powerful galactic superwind. Fueled by rapid star formation and frequent supernova explosions in the central region, enormous quantities of gas and dust are being expelled perpendicular to the galaxy’s disk. These outflows form spectacular bipolar plumes extending thousands of light-years into intergalactic space. Hα emission traces this ionized gas in exquisite detail, revealing filamentary structures, shock fronts, and turbulent flows that testify to the extreme energy being injected into the interstellar medium. Dark dust lanes slicing through the central disk add further contrast, highlighting the chaotic conditions within the starburst core.
