      NGC 2835, Intermediate Spiral Galaxy

NGC 2835 is an intermediate spiral galaxy located in the constellation Hydra. It is located at a distance of 35 million light years. (ESA/Hubble)

The core of the galaxy is composed of older yellow stars with long lifespans, on the order of billions of years, like our sun.

The arms of the galaxy are composed of a high concentration of blue stars. Blue stars are very hot and have a short lifespan on the order of hundreds of millions years.

The pink regions that dot the spiral arms are H-alpha regions. These pink regions are regions rich in hydrogen gas (HII Nebulae). Stars are formed in these regions and drift out into the galaxy's arms.

Although the galaxy is quite symmetric, the southern arms (lower in the image) appear less developed in their outer parts than the northern ones.
