Abell S0373 - Fornax Galaxy Cluster 2 Panel Mosaic

Abell S0373 corresponds to the Fornax Galaxy Cluster, one of the nearest and most compact rich galaxy clusters in the local universe. Located in the southern constellation Fornax at a distance of roughly 60–65 million light-years, it is far closer than massive systems like Virgo or Perseus, yet very different in character. Rather than being dominated by spirals, Fornax is an environment where elliptical and lenticular galaxies prevail, shaped by frequent gravitational encounters within a relatively dense but dynamically evolved cluster core.

At the heart of the cluster lies NGC 1399, a giant elliptical galaxy surrounded by a swarm of smaller companions. This central region is rich in globular clusters and low-surface-brightness galaxies, and it marks the gravitational center around which the rest of the cluster is organized. Many Fornax members show smooth light profiles and truncated disks, clear signs that interactions with the cluster environment—tidal forces, galaxy harassment, and the hot intracluster medium—have stripped away gas and suppressed new star formation over time.

What makes the Fornax Cluster especially interesting in widefield imaging is its high galaxy density combined with relatively low distance. Dozens of cluster members fit comfortably into a single field, ranging from bright ellipticals to faint dwarf galaxies that hover at the edge of detectability. Interspersed among them are countless background galaxies at much greater distances, producing a layered view of cosmic structure where the nearby cluster sits like a dense foreground knot against the deep universe.

This image is a two-panel LRGB mosaic, built from a minimal dataset of just 2-3 450-second exposures per channel per panel.
