LDN 1251, aka Rotten fish nebula (LRGB)

First attempt at LDN 1251, affectionately known as the "Rotten Fish" Nebula.

While emission nebulae get all the glory for their bright reds and blues, there is something hauntingly beautiful about a Dark Nebula. This isn't empty space; it is a dense molecular cloud of interstellar dust and gas so thick that it blocks the light of the background stars behind it.

The Structure: Located about 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus, this dusty complex is actually a stellar nursery. Deep within those dark "fins," gravity is collapsing gas to form new, low-mass stars. The Color (LRGB): Since this is a broadband LRGB image, the colors are natural. You can see the subtle brown and rusty hues of the dust reflecting the starlight around it, contrasting with the colorful field of background stars and distant galaxies peeking through the thinner edges.
