M22 — Long Before Dawn — A Globular Cluster's Story
Long before our Sun ignited, before Earth formed, and before there was a dawn for humanity to witness, globular clusters were already among the oldest residents of the young Milky Way. M22 is one of those remarkable survivors.
Located approximately 10,600 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, Messier 22 is one of the nearest and brightest globular clusters visible from Earth. Estimated to be nearly 12 billion years old, it contains hundreds of thousands of stars bound together by gravity—many formed when our galaxy was still in its infancy.
Unlike open clusters, whose stars gradually drift apart over hundreds of millions of years, globular clusters endure for billions. Their tightly packed cores preserve some of the oldest stellar populations in the Milky Way, offering astronomers a living record of our galaxy's earliest chapters. In many ways, they are cosmic time capsules.
This image seeks to tell that story. The brilliant central concentration gives way to an expansive halo of ancient suns before merging into the rich star fields of the Galactic bulge. Subtle differences in stellar color reveal an ancient community of stars whose shared history reaches back nearly 12 billion years.
Every point of light you see here began its journey long before Earth had oceans, continents, or a sunrise.
