      IC 359 Region

The IC 359 region refers to an area of the night sky located within the northern constellation of Taurus. In astronomical literature, this designation can sometimes cause minor confusion because it can apply to two entirely distinct celestial objects occupying the same field of view: The IC 359 Reflection Nebula (and Dust Complex) shown here is more commonly sought after by wide-field astrophotographers, this region features a faint reflection nebula. It is embedded within high-latitude interstellar dust filaments that make up part of the outer, more diffuse regions of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) complex. The region is characterized by extensive, very low-surface-brightness cosmic dust—often categorized as Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN) or galactic cirrus—which is illuminated dimly by the collective starlight of the Milky Way. Denser pockets form dark absorption nebulae, while small areas scatter starlight to glow with a characteristic blue reflection tint. Distance: It sits relatively close to us, estimated at 300 to 500 light-years away. Catalog Overlaps: The IC 359 Galaxy Directly behind or adjacent to this dusty foreground sits the actual object historically cataloged as IC 359 in the Index Catalogue. It is a background elliptical (or lenticular) galaxy. Brightness: It has a very faint apparent visual magnitude of roughly 15.4 and is almost imperceptible in this image
