      M101 WITH SUPERNOVA 2023IXF

M101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy located about 21 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. It is one of the brightest galaxies in the northern sky and can be easily seen with binoculars.

On May 19, 2023, amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki discovered a supernova in M101. The supernova, named SN 2023ixf, is a type II supernova, which means that it was caused by the explosion of a massive star. SN 2023ixf is the closest supernova to Earth in five years and is currently visible in small telescopes.

The supernova is located in the southwest region of M101, close to the prominent star-forming region NGC 5461. Previous studies of this area found it contained three clusters of young stars, which are common places to find the supergiant stars that eventually go supernova.

SN 2023ixf is expected to remain visible for several more months. It is a rare opportunity to study a supernova so close to Earth, and astronomers are eager to learn more about how these stellar explosions work.

Here are some additional details about SN 2023ixf:

The supernova was first detected at magnitude 14.9.

It has since brightened to magnitude 11.0.

It is located about 21 million light-years from Earth.

It is a type II supernova.

It is the closest supernova to Earth in five years.

It is expected to remain visible for several more months.
