This is an image of NGC 1499, also known as the California Nebula. It is an emission nebula about 1,000 light years away in the constellation Perseus. Its fluorescence is due to excitation of the Hβ line in the nebula by the nearby O7 star, Xi Persei (also known as Menkib, seen at center above the nebula).
