An LMC Superbubble

In 1956, astronomer-astronaut Karl Henize created a catalogue of emission-line objects in the Magellanic Clouds. This complex, dubbed LHA120-N11 in that catalogue, is the second-largest star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud; its overall structure is that of a 'superbubble', roughly 1000 light-years across. The rich blues in this Hubble-palette image show that much of the gas is relatively highly ionized by the cluster of hot stars at the centre of the nebula, NGC 1761.
