NGC 2359, Thor's Helmet

NGC 2359, also known as Thor's Helmet, is a large, complex and striking emission nebula located in the constellation Canis Major, about 11,000 light-years away from Earth. The nebula is believed to have formed from a Wolf-Rayet star, an extremely massive and hot star that has exhausted most of its hydrogen fuel and is shedding its outer layers through a strong stellar wind. The intense ultraviolet radiation from the star ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to emit light in different colors, which results in the beautiful and intricate patterns of the nebula. The overall shape of NGC 2359 resembles a helmet, with a central bubble surrounded by two bright lobes, and several dark filaments and knots of gas and dust that create a three-dimensional appearance. The nebula is a popular target for astrophotography and amateur astronomy, and is considered one of the most impressive objects in the night sky.
