NGC 1313 has a surprisingly irregular shape, and its rotation axis is not exactly at its center. NGC 1313 also displays intense star formation activity and associated supershells. NGC 1313 is dominated by scattered patches of intense star formation, giving the galaxy a rather irregular appearance. The irregular shape, irregular appearance, and intense star formation can all be explained by a past galactic collision. However, NGC 1313 appears to be an isolated galaxy and has no direct neighbors. Therefore, it is unclear whether it has swallowed a small companion in the past.
